Lastly and possibly most importantly is the introduction of save points. We also see the debut of hidden collectables, though in this case its hidden GTA2 logos rather than Hidden Packages like in future titles. First off is a Six Star Wanted Level system, complete with FBI and Swat vans at 5 and the army being called in at level six ,which was quite the difference from the four level of not-much-difference we got in the original game (that I may have forgot to mention…) Then we get side quests that include collecting specific cars and selling them (at a place called “Wang Cars”, got to love the Britishness that sneaks into GTA games all the time…) and Kill Frenzies, both from the original, but now also include missions for when you take over taxis and emergency vehicles, another future staple of the series. GTA2 also debuted several things that would become staples of nearly all GTA games that came after it. It’s all helpfully indicated on the top left of the HUD and definitely the thing I always remember about the game. It was great fun “picking a side” and then having to motor through the SRS area avoid flamethrower-wielding clone people (don’t ask) or other such issues. As you do more and more missions for one faction you unlock more missions with higher pay-outs but you also start gaining a negative rep for the other gangs in the area, let it get too low and they’ll shoot you on sight should you wander near their territory. You see each of the three maps have three gangs operating in it, one is the Zaibatsu Corporation (legit business that also takes part in illegal activity… like, all of them), and then in the first area, the Downtown District, you have the Loonies (bunch of crazy people working together vaguely) and the Yakuza (self-explanatory), in the Residential District are the SRS Scientists (underground scientists performing off-the-record experiments) and the Rednecks (… just some rednecks with pickup trucks and guns…), and finally in the Industrial District is Russian Mafia (self-explanatory) and the Hare Krishnas (peaceful religious people… who kill). What GTA2 does differently, and differently to all games that come after it as well, is the Respect system. Once again you start off in a section of city, in this case “Anywhere, USA”, and you have to make a certain amount of money to progress to the next one, and you make money by committing crimes, doing side missions and doing main missions, the latter is where things change for this game. Vehicles can also be fitted with weapons like machine guns, oil slicks and mines for that extra Bond-like touch. ![]() ![]() That part is the same, though there is a better selection of weaponry including silenced guns, dual pistols and an “Electrogun” thanks to its setting allowing for a bit more sci-fi. You can steal cars and motorbikes and drive them around / kill people as well as outfit them with bombs or get them resprayed to avoid the police. It’s top down with a zooming camera (though this time the zooming is much smoother and with far less pixelization) and you can still run, punch, shoot and explode things with admittedly often awkward aiming controls. The gameplay at its core is still very similar to the first game. As you become more familiar with the game and find things you don’t like, you can fully customize the settings to your playstyle.I was never sure quite what these cars were supposed to look like. ![]() While these controls will provide a standard baseline, it’s worth messing around with these and other settings to fully optimize the game to the way you play. And while his work in Zero Dark Thirty is truly phenomenal - the raid scene ranks among the best shot scenes in the decade - his work on Lioncertainly deserves its recognition. Cinematographer Greig Fraser, who has done some fantastic work including Zero Dark Thirty and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, finally received an overdue Oscar nomination for his work. ![]() While the performances give an emotional center for the movie, the cinematography and score do all they can to support them. While much of it is suggested with the editing - they cut in scenes from his past similarly to the way that a war movie would portray PTSD - Patel’s reactions to the memories are even more important. Patel, on the other hand, depicts the psychological journey. Sunny Pawar puts in some really great work as the young Saroo in a nearly wordless performance. The shift from book to screen infused the story with an element of the mental toll that the story would take on a four-year-old boy and how it shapes the man he becomes. Most of that falls on the shoulders of Dev Patel, who drives much of the story with his physicality and facial expressions. However, this is a story about Saroo and the movie does a lot to portray his emotional journey. I suspect that it will be her Oscar scene. It culminates in an incredible scene that reminds us of Nicole Kidman’s talents. In the movie, we see Sue being affected, not by Saroo’s search, but by the fact that he chose to hide it from her and that he was distant from her. In Saroo’s memoir, he protects his mother from his attempts to find his birth mother in fear that he is going to hurt her. In particular, the character of Sue Brierley is given new life in the movie. And while Lioncertainly toes that line, writer Luke Davies keeps the focus on the character’s emotional journey rather than the physical one. The issue with a lot of movies based on incredible true stories is that the focus of the emotion is on plot, rather than character. However, it’s also one that could easily be exploited for its emotional beats. The journey Saroo takes is an incredible one. While the story has the plot of a Lifetime movie, it is true, yet improbable as it sounds. Twenty years later as an adult ( Dev Patel), Saroo decides to use Google Earth to find his long-lost family. Eventually, he is taken into an orphanage and is adopted by an Australian family, Sue ( Nicole Kidman) and John ( David Wenham). For months he must fend for himself by eating scraps of food and taking shelter under bridges. After two days on the train, being carried away from his mother, two brothers, and sister, he finds himself in Calcutta (modern-day Kolkatta). While following his older brother to a neighboring town, he becomes trapped in a train carriage. Liontells the true story of Saroo Brierley ( Sunny Pawar), a boy who grew up as poor as one could in India - begging for scraps of food, caring for his young sister while his mother does hard labor. However, Davis’ vision of Saroo’s journey is simultaneously devastating, yet filled with beauty, both human and cinematic. Lion could have easily fallen into the idealistic cookie cutter crowdpleaser category. ![]() He simply wasn’t equipped with the talent to translate his too-good-to-be-true story onto the page. That’s not to fault the book’s author and subject Saroo Brierley. But this story of what happened to the Jews of Europe AFTER the Holocaust, and what we went through is very well covered in this accurate and insightful documentary.Lion is one of the few inspirational true stories that translates beautifully on screen thanks to director Garth Davis and a strong performance by Dev PatelĪ Long Way Home, the book that the movie Lionis based on, is essentially devoid of emotion. At the time the Irgun was fighting the British and the Arabs. But I was born with health problems that needed attention, and both my parents had lost their first families and children to the Nazis in the war, so when Truman offered to finally take us in 1948, my parents decided on Brooklyn rather than Tel Aviv. In the case of my father, because he had military experience, having been inducted into the Red Army after fleeing Poland, and having fought from Leningrad to Berlin, and then having defected at the first opportunity, the Irgun - the terrorist underground - offered to secretly fly my father and us to Palestine. We were waiting to to Palestine, but the British had blockaded the coast. We thought only Gentiles had grandparents. Our grandparents were shot into ditches later burned to get rid of the evidence so not one of us children knew what it meant to have a grandparent.
